Tihs stein is numbered # 2066. It is a 2 1/2 liter. It measures 19 1/2 inches from bottom ot the tip of lid. Pokals are large ceremonial drinking vessels that do not have handles. Often they stand on a pedestal and have a removable lid. nOe can assume that they were filled with large amounts of beer (to the brim) and used to celebrate special occasions. Pieces like this may have been used for the starkbierzeit, or strong beer festivalâ? , held every march in munich as a break from lenten self-denial. In htis case, the pokal would have been filled with doppelbock, a special brew with as much as 10 per cent alcohol by volume, brewed especially for the starkbierzeit. Produced in 1897, this beautiful pokal is etched meaning the designis incised into the body of the piece. The design is of a maiedn and a cavalier. It is signde h. Schlitt. This pokal is in mint condition with the exception of, it does has a minor repair on the lid, that is barely visible to the naked eye. The picture has been magnified to show repair.
